    A Descriptive Study of Male and Female Teachers' Preferences of Strategies Used for Teaching Speaking in SMPN 1 Singaraja,

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan strategi yang dipilih oleh guru pria dan wanita dalam mengajar berbicara di SMPN 1 Singaraja. Penelitian ini menganalisis strategi yang dipilih oleh lima guru bahasa Inggris yang mengajar kelas tujuh dan delapan di SMPN 1 Singaraja. Penelitian ini dirancang sebagai sebuah penelitian deskriptif yang menerapkan teknik analisis isi (content analysis) untuk menunjukkan dan memverifikasi data yang diperlukan. Pengambilan data dilakukan dengan observasi, kuesioner, dan wawancara dengan guru pria dan wanita. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa guru pria dan wanita menggunakan empat dari tujuh strategi mengajar dalam mengajar berbicara pada siswa mereka. Strategi tersebut adalah instruksi langsung, diskusi, bekerja berkelompok, dan aktivitas kinerja. Alasan dari guru pria dan wanita menggunakan strategi tersebut karena strategi tersebut dapat membuat siswa aktif berpartisipasi di kelas. Siswa dapat bertukar pengetahuan, ide atau opini dalam diskusi atau bekerja berkelompok dengan siswa lainnya. Siswa juga dapat belajar berbicara lebih banyak dalam aktivitas kinerja yang dapat membuat siswa percaya diri ketika siswa harus berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris dengan orang lain. Kata Kunci : strategi mengajar, guru pria dan wanita, mengajar berbicara This study was carried out to describe male and female teachers' preferences of strategies used for teaching speaking and the reasons why male and female teachers used certain strategies for teaching speaking in SMPN 1 Singaraja. This study analyzed strategy preferences of five English teachers who taught in grade seven and eight in SMPN 1 Singaraja. This study was designed as a descriptive study by applying seven Killen's teaching strategies that adapted content analysis technique to reveal and verify the needed data. The data collection was done through observation, questionnaire, and interviewing male and female English teachers. The results show that male English teachers used four of seven Killen's teaching strategies in teaching speaking to their students. The strategies were direct instruction, discussion, group work, and performance activity. While female English teachers also preferred four of seven Killen's teaching strategies used for teaching speaking in the classroom. The reasons of male and female teachers used certain strategies because those strategies made students actively participate in the class. They could share their knowledge, ideas or opinion in discussion session or in group work with their partner or their group. They also learned to speak English more in the performance activity that could make them confident when they should speak English with other people

The aim this research is To describe how the ways self-directed learners in speaking English done by Non-English Department. The subjects of research are five students Non English Department 2nd semester of Perbankan Syariah in IAIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo by using qualitative method and collected data by using interview unstructured and documentation.     A Descriptive Study of the Shift of Roles Between a Teacher and Students in English Classroom Discourse

    This study was aimed to figure out the exchange patterns during classroom interaction and its relation to the shift of roles of serving primary knower between a teacher and students. Thirty nine students of twelfth grade and an English teacher in a public senior high school in Bandung were involved as the participants. This study employed a descriptive-qualitative method, and the main data were classroom observation transcript and teacher's interview transcript. The data analysis was done by applying classroom discourse analysis through coding and categorizing utterances of teacher and students into exchange categories proposed by Suherdi (2009). The findings reveal that both Non-Anomalous (Knowledge-Oriented and Action-Oriented) and Anomalous Exchanges (Elliptical, Defective, and Broken) were found in the interaction between the teacher and the students, therefore the exchange categories affect the shift of roles of serving primary knower between teacher and students. With regard to the findings, two exchanges were likely to be dominant among other exchanges throughout four meetings of the lesson; those are DK1-initiated exchanges (30.19%) and A1-initiated exchanges (34.57%)

    Bullying at the Middle School Level: A Descriptive Study

    Bullying within schools has been a topic of great interest in recent years. Due to various factors, bullying is a particularly large problem at middle schools. In order to obtain further research on this topic, a study was conducted at a small suburban middle school in Connecticut. Teachers were given surveys to complete to address their thoughts on bullying. Additionally, a smaller subsample of teachers and the school social worker were interviewed. The data gathered from the surveys and interviews revealed that bullying was in fact present at the school. Participants expressed that students tend to bully one another in more indirect rather than direct ways, making it difficult for staff to notice when bullying is taking place. Being aware of this theme can help teachers and social workers at others schools learn how to better identify bullying behaviors and address them in more effective ways. On a higher level, this study has implications for policy and social work practice; legislators can work to create more uniform policies regarding bullying and social workers can gain a better understanding of how to effectively work with adolescents who are involved with bullying

    Descriptive Study On Destination Image Perception By The Surabaya Domestic Tourists

    Tourist destinations is an important sector role inthe economy. For that a tourist destination should be handled properly in order to meet the expectations of tourists and the community. Indicators that can be used to find out how the performance of tourist destinations is the image of tourism destinations. This study aims to describe how the image of tourists to the city of Surabaya as a tourist destination. Dimensions are used to measure the perceptions of tourists are (1) environmental beauty and convenience, (2) the country’s citizens,(3) place and architectural structure, (4) shopping and tourist accommodation, and (5) local culture and cuisine. The results showed that respondents are divided into 2 based on the perception of the destination image Surabaya city. The most positive image in the dimension of the shopping and accommodation, and the lowest image is the structure of space and architecture. Tourists give the perception that the city of Surabaya has a shopping tour of interesting places to visit, but the historic sights and natural attractions are still not yet become an attractive option to visit

    Sleep Characteristics in Patients with Whiplash-Associated Disorders: A Descriptive Study

    Study Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore sleep habits and characteristics of patients with whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) presenting at an outpatient, chiropractic clinic using the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) Sleep Scale. Methods: Fifty-one patients from an outpatient chiropractic and physical therapy clinic specializing in spinal rehabilitation participated in this cross-sectional, descriptive study. Data were collected using a descriptive survey, the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), the Neck Disability Index (NDI), and the self-administered 12-item MOS Sleep Scale. Data analysis included descriptive statistics to describe pain, disability, and sleep characteristics of the study sample, and computation of confidence intervals to determine differences in means of sleep characteristics between the non-WAD population (as determined by previous studies) and the study sample of WAD patients. Results: Results indicate that when compared to normative values of the non-WAD population, the sample of WAD patients in this study presents with significantly greater measures of neck disability (NDI), neck pain (VAS), sleep disturbance, snoring, shortness of breath and headache, sleep somnolence and sleep problems index I and II. This sample also presents with significantly lower measures of optimal sleep when compared to the general population. Conclusion: Consistent with previous research, findings from this study indicate that WAD patients have increased neck disability and pain, and poorer sleep outcomes, indicating the need for clinicians to assess sleep characteristics and incorporate interventions aimed at alleviating these symptoms when planning rehabilitation. Findings provide evidence for the need to further explore sleep disturbances among WAD patients to establish a stronger understanding of the course and prognosis of this condition
